N is for Nicholas Cage

Let me start by saying, this A to Z Movie Smackdown is going to be a free-for-all. The best of the best to the worst of the worst. Because "N" is for Nicholas Cage, and the man is a legacy unto himself. I mean what . . . strange and fascinating choices of film roles he's made over the years. Movies we respect, movies we, ahem, make drinking games out of.

And while I've done my best each day to restrain myself to just two movies (and the occasional Alternate Pairing), today I simply could NOT narrow it down. I wouldn't even know where to start.

So for today's Smackdown, feel free to VOTE for whichever Nicholas Cage movie you just can't live without. Whether it's because it's a genuinely great film, or a movie you just love to hate, vote away. And feel free to add any of your own favorite Nick Cage movies not featured below to the list. There are just soooo many good ones.

N is for Nicholas Cage:

  1. I can't choose between The Rock and Con Air - one has Sean Connery and one has John Cusack! Can I vote for both, pretty please? ;)

  2. I don't know about best, but his worst film (and new low point of his entire acting career) has got to be last year's Left Behind.

  3. Cage is awesome, period. I am going to write in a candidate "Drive Angry"... or the new upcoming Cage and Hayden Christensen "OUTCAST". Yeah you know it's going to be great!

  4. I can see us arriving at the movies together and going to see different films. I think I've seen a few of the above films, but have no recollection of them. I'll vote for 'Eleni'. Oh no, wait, that was written by Nicholas Gage, not Cage.

  5. I promise it won't be The Wicker Man!
Face Off. One of John Woo's best.

  6. The Rock - every day of the week. Sean Connery's in it, so that's a double whammy.

  7. What kind of monster makes people choose between 9 of the best movies ever made, first thing in the morning? It's inhumane. I haven't even finished my first cup of coffee.

My vote goes to The Sorcerer's Apprentice, with an honorable mention to 2012, the most Nicholas Cage movie to not have Nicholas Cage in it.

    1. "the most Nicholas Cage movie to not have Nicholas Cage in it." I think that is the best description I have ever heard of that movie.

  8. I've only seen The Rock so I'll have to go with that.

  9. Of those, the ones I liked best were Con Air, Face Off and Ghost Rider.
My favourite Nicholas Cage movie is Moonstruck, with The Family Man a close second.

  10. Yikes, the only one pictured above that I've seen (and therefore, is my favorite!) is The Rock. He was great in that, so it's a solid pick, even though I realize now that I'm seriously behind on the Nicholas Cage bandwagon! Great choice for "N", though!

  12. I love Nicholas Cage. He's such a great actor. Choosing is hard, but I think he was awesome in Face Off.

  13. I had no idea I was so lacking in my Nicholas Cage movie familiarity. I did see Sorcerer's Apprentice with my family, though, and we really enjoyed it!

  14. Face Off :) Although Con Air was great.

  15. I'm going to run with National Treasure on this one. :)

  16. Haven't seen them all, and he's one of my favorite's but think of those you listed I would vote The Rock, but really Sean Connery is who first comes to mind when I think of the movie, not Cage.

  17. I liked "Joe". "Joe" is a white trash version of Eastwood's "Gran Torino". Cage was at his best as a middle aged alcoholic trying to save everybody but unable to save himself.

  18. Not listed, but have to go with Valley Girl! Still one of my favorite movies and the one where I "fell in love" with Nicholas Cage.

  19. Wow! Yes, you are right, the good and the bad and all kinds of in between.... So many noted in the other comments too.
    Con Air of course
    The Rock
    Face Off
    Raising Arizona ;-)
    Leaving Las Vegas...

  20. My favorite Nicholas Cage movie is not here (Gone in 60 Seconds), so I'm going to go with National Treasure :)

  21. Yes i too lik Nicolas Cage but have seen only few of his movies. Face Off is one of them.

  22. Uuuuuuummmmmmm. Conair, The Sorcerer's Apprentice, Face/Off, KICK ASS, and DEFINITELY Gone in 60 Seconds!

    ReplyDelete
  23. This is another hard one! For me, it's a tie between Face Off and National Treasure.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Con Air is probably my first and The Rock my second. I mean Sean Connery and all. Then National Treasure which really enhanced our visits to DC.

    ReplyDelete
  25. National Treasure is fun and it has Helen Mirren in the 2nd film. Face Off is another good one. I love Raising Arizona.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Nick Cage is hit and miss for me, but Kick Ass is a great movie.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Out of the options, National Treasure. But outside of them, Adaptation.

  28. Con Air, 'Put the bunny back in the box....Why couldn't you put the bunny back in the box?' :)

  29. For me, I'd say my favorite with Nick Cage would be National Treasure, Kick Ass, and the super old school Moonstruck - Snap out of it! hehehe

  30. my top three from the ones up there are are 1) national treasure 2) the rock 3) con-air

  31. I'll go for National Treasure. It's the one I remember clearly. I still love his Moonstruck though. He's at his best when he's a mellow character. Something in his eyes.

    ReplyDelete
  32. He's had some real hits and misses. Not much in between. I did like the National Treasure movies. Hope there's a third on yet to come.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Well, I kindof enjoyed Wicker Man, I think. But Kick Ass was so much fun I *have* to vote for that one!

  34. My vote is for Con-Air. It was a pretty good movie. Thanks for stopping by our blog.

  36. Aarrrggghhhh!!!! I vote all! Listed or not (not the misses though) some of them are just off.

  37. I have to vote Con Air. With apologies to: Face/Off, The Rock, Drive Angry, Next, Snake Eyes, Knowing, and of course, Wicker Man

  39. He can definitely be up and down with his movies. I love The Rock, Con Air, and Gone in 60 Seconds. He was good in the first Ghost Rider, but I hated him in the second. Couldn't even get into Drive Angry at all. His overacting is either perfect or irritating and you never know which it's going to be.

  40. Nicholas Cage is right up there with Tom Cruise. If I see either name associated with a movie, I quickly pass it by. I know a lot of people like him, but there's something about Cage that I just cannot tolerate. Sorry all you fans :/

  41. I liked the National Treasure movies, Sorcerer's Apprentice, and Moonstruck. I haven't seen the others.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Out of your picks I'd have to go with Con Air, but I think my fav NC movie is Matchstick Men.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Ghost Rider! I'd vote for Valley Girl, but it didn't make the cut! :(

    ReplyDelete
  44. Oh boy...so many choices! I'm going to have to go with ConAir, such a great cast of characters (including Nicholas Cage).
