It's the last post of the first week of the challenge. Four days down, twenty-two to go. It reminds me of the one and only full marathon I ever ran, when I hit that fourth mile marker and thought, oh dear Lord. How am I ever going to finish this one?

For today's A to Z Movie Smackdown, I thought I'd feature two movies that came out within months of each other in the summer of 1998. They're known as "twin films", a term used when two movies of a similar plot produced under two different studios race to see which one gets distributed to audiences first. I saw both of these in the theater that summer, and I had a good time with both. Still, overall I have to say that Deep Impact was the better movie. The fact that I love Morgan Freeman also helps.

I think that Armageddon was the box office winner just because of the cast. While I enjoyed both I think I would vote for deep impact too. More realistic as far as world ending movies go I guess..
ReplyDeleteI've never been particularly motivated to watch any of the four selections all the way through. But I like disaster flicks just fine, like 2012.
ReplyDeleteArmageddon was dumb and fun, but Deep Impact was the better film. However, if I was to watch either again, I'd pick Armageddon.
ReplyDeleteI remember both of these very well. I enjoyed both, but I'll go with Armageddon because of the humor they snuck in to the script.
ReplyDeleteGood for you for at least running one marathon! Best I did was a 5K :) Going with Armageddon; the scene when Bruce Willis dies and then to the rest of the movie is always a sad one here.

My gut reaction was to dep impact first. So I vote for that one. Despite the awesomeness of the Armageddon song.

I can't remember if I saw those movies - maybe they didn't make an impact on me. But I enjoyed this post thank you!
I haven't seen either of these movies. I'm going to have a very long to-be-watched list by the end of the month!

Ha! As much as I go to movies, you keep coming up with films I've never seen. More to add to the list!
ReplyDeleteThey are both rather silly and both had some irritation characters but I go with Deep Impact. Armageddon was good but I found Ben Affleck irritating plus I didn't believe (Did I just write that?) that he could get back to the ship. Anyhoo Depp Impact it is:)

ReplyDeleteI'm sorry, but the best disaster movie is 2012. Hands down. Frankly, I was a little surprised it didn't make it into the marquee matchup, but to not even make the alternate pairing? That's a travesty. No, it's a sham. No, not a sham, a mockery. Wait, wait, it's a traveshamockery. Of epic proportions.

ReplyDeleteAlthough Deep Impact shows...well, the impact of the meteror hitting more, I still have to go with Armageddon. It just seems like a stronger story to me. Plus, the tidal wave in Deep Impact scares the you-know-what out of me. Haha!
Armageddon all the way. After many viewings, I still cry when Bruce Willis says good bye. And I like films where the entire world comes together though in real life, we'd probably all die before that happens.

ReplyDeleteI am definitely not a disaster movie type of girl. The husband is a major fan (I roll my eyes at how many times he wants to watch Twister). ReplyDelete1998?? It's like I just entered a time warp and the last 17 years just took 17 minutes... I need a nap. Not a fan of thrillers so I vote for the one that takes the least amount of dramatic time to kill people... which is the main reason I don't like thrillers... and they are so noisy.

Seen all four...The Core is about as daft as a disaster movie can get...The Day after Tomorrow is okay. Deep Impact was good but lacked...the high octane force of Armageddon. Although it has to be said Armageddon is crazy stupid. lol :) LOVE disaster movies.
