R is for Robin Williams

Good morning A to Z-ers. I want to start off by apologizing to everyone who commented on my blog the past three days that I haven't gotten back to yet. I was in the LAND OF NO INTERNET (I seriously didn't know that still existed today) for a few days and fell way behind, but I'm going to do my best to play catch-up today! I can't wait to stop by and check out all your posts I missed.

As for today's post, let me preface this by saying this A to Z Movie Smackdown is going to be a bit of a tearjerker. It's been several months since the death of Robin Williams, but my heart still hurts a little to think of a beloved childhood idol passing away before his time. His movies made me laugh, took me on adventures, and taught me some important life lessons.

His body of work is simply spectacular, and I could have easily listed twenty films here for you to choose from. Instead I decided to pick my favorites -- the movies I watched so often as a little girl I still have them memorized. Sorry for the extra selection, but narrowing it down to three was the best I could do. So VOTE for your favorite Robin Williams film and never forget the joy he brought to the big screen.

Many of you have already heard the wonderful news already, but for those of you who haven't, let me be the first to tell you that this year -- for the FIRST time -- the A to Z Challenge is releasing a Survivor T-Shirt to commemorate all your hard work!

Created by our very own, very talented Jeremy Hawkins, you can get a shirt of your very own at NETOSHOP. I for one plan to wear mine around May 1st like a badge of honor, possibly while carrying a boom box (if indeed one of those dinosaurs can still be found) belting out Queen's We Are the Champions. It seems a fitting end to an exhilarating challenge.

  1. This is a hard one indeed. I love all his movies, the ones shortlisted inclusive. If I had to choose one, I'll go for Mrs. Doubtfire I guess. From the alternative pairing, I'd chose Aladdin; it is still one of my favorite movies from the Disney renaissance.

  2. I have to go with Hook - I love that movie. Robin Williams was such a great actor and brought such love and joy to so many. My fav film of his ever, is actually Bicentennial man - I cry through it, a lot!

  3. Of the three, I'd say Mrs. Doubtfire. But my first pick would be Aladdin. He was the perfect genie.

  4. His suicide threw us completely, because we had no idea he was suffering. He ever revealed his true feelings to the world. ~~~~ My favorite is Mrs. Doubtfire.

  8. FINALLY!! Movies I've actually seen!!! I'm casting my vote for Mrs. Doubtfire, with a special shout-out to two of his less-famous movies, which you didn't nominate but in which I thought he was brilliant: GOOD MORNING VIETNAM and MOSCOW ON THE HUDSON.

  9. Three excellent choices here, but I think I'd have to pick Mrs. Doubtfire. So good, and can't believe he's gone. Glad he made a lot of excellent movies, though -- there are many great ways to remember him!

  10. I loved Hook, but the whole story premise for Jumangi is my FAVORITE!! Love the mix of supernatural, the past, the present, the game that is forever in control!!

  11. Yikes! I can't pick! My childhood favourite is Mrs. Doubtfire but watching Jumangi with my kids was another entirely different kind of favourite.... :-)

  12. I don't know if I need to choose one of the offered choices. I loved Robin Williams. He was a great man and humanitarian. I liked Patch Adams best of his movies. But reviewing a list of movies he was in, I see there are many I have not seen yet like Angriest Man in Brooklyn and Boulevard. I also liked him in Dead Poet Society and Jumangi and one of his dark side movies, Insomnia.

  13. I would go with Jumangi because I enjoyed it numerous times with my children. Hook was creepy.

  14. If I have to pick from the list, I go with Mrs. Doubtfire. But The World According to Garp is a big favorite of mine.

  15. Mrs Doubtfire made me laugh. My sister appreciates me for introducing her to RW.

  17. I loved the World According to Garp. I had read the book first and thought the film was wonderful. But there will always be a corner in my heart for Mrs Doubtfire!

  18. I know it's not a movie, but I'm old enough to remember him in the Mork and Mindy TV show. I fell in love with him then and have continued to be amazed at his talent all these years since. Recently saw the last Night at the Museum movie which came out after his death...seemed extra special because of that, somehow.

  19. I loved Robin Williams. He lived such a sad life underneath when he was making all of us laugh. I'll never forget Mrs. Doubtfire - very funny and memorable.

I didn't know T-shirts were available. Thanks for mentioning that.

  20. My vote goes to Mrs. Doubtfire and Aladdin for the alternative, both some of my childhood favorites :)

  21. It was pretty sad to here he had died, especially when we found out he committed suicide. For the movies you have here, I'd vote Mrs. Doubtfire.

  22. I loved him in Mrs. Doubtfire. However, as a (former) teacher, Dead Poet's Society always gets my top vote.

  23. I felt a catch in my throat when I saw the title of your post. He is missed and will be for a very long time.

Of these movies, I definitely vote for Mrs. Doubtfire. I also loved him as Patch Adams. He was a great, shining talent.

  24. Jumanji and Alladin.

Loved him on inside the actor's studio. He created 52 characters and then did a whole vinnette when he won the Oscar that is hilarious.

  25. I'd go with Mrs. Doubtfire, if only because it's the one I grew up with when I was little. These days I know how ridiculous the premise is, but boy did I love it at the time. I think Robin Williams had that effect on everyone.

  26. My pick would be Jumanji. It was a fun movie to watch.

  27. My favorite of his movies is Jumanji from the choices you've given. Otherwise it would have to be Dead Poets Society, Good Will Hunting, or Mork and Mindy. I know that last one is a tv show, but I liked it a lot. Thanks for visiting my R Post today!

  28. As I am visiting some of the A-Z Challenge posts, my favorite Robin Williams movie is on in the background and not one of your choices. The Birdcage! -http://50andfabulousblog.blogspot.com

  29. Oh these are all great but I go with Mrs. Doubtfire. I think he just excelled in that film and kept the comedy reigned in but still delivered. I love The Fisher King and What Dreams May Come-not comedies but still brilliant

  30. You Picked the best three of his movies.. though almost all his work is worth watching again and again..

  32. On a side note I'm having the worst internet issues possible so I feel your pain! Puts me so behind too!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I'd have to vote Birdcage, Aladdin, or Dead Poet's Society. ;)

  34. Mrs Doubtfire- I loved all of his movies, but this one is special!

  35. BANGARANG!~ Hook, but Mrs. Doubtfire. But also Patch Adams and Dead Poet's Society. And a little bit of Birdcage too.... Ok I'm bad at this choosing thing....
