Insecure Writers Support Group

It's the first Wednesday of the month and time for another Insecure Writers Support Group post. A big shout out to Alex J. Cavanaugh for starting this great outlet for writers looking to help one another and gain support. I'm so excite to be one of this month's co-hosts and can't wait to get around to everyone's blogs.

This month I'm facing a bit of a challenge. What do you do when you feel like you're stuck in a bit of a publishing black hole? My manuscript hasn't seen the light of day in ages and I'm starting to think that my agent may have lost my number . . .

I'm not really sure where to go at this point. I'm trying to work on something new but feel very uninspired. Any other writers out there facing similar challenges? What are you doing to climb back toward the light?

Insecure Writer's Support Group

It's the first Wednesday of the month and time for a new Insecure Writer's Support Group post. Thank you so much to Alex J. Cavanaugh for starting this wonderful outlet for writers, and all his co-hosts for their hard work keeping it running so smoothly. If you're an insecure writer looking for some support, check us out here!

I don't have a lot to say today other than, hi! It's been a long time (so long in fact I have to re-sign up for IWSG . . . good thing it's always there when you need it). I've been away from my blog for a while, distracted with new-Mommy-hood, and it's sometimes a little daunting to dust off the old typewriter (aka. my laptop) and dive back in. It's so nice to have IWSG to come back to for my first post.

I'm going to try to get around to as many insecure writers as I can today between nap times and play dates, but for those of you I don't get to right away, good luck with all your struggles this month. Can't wait to come by and meet you!

Insecure Writer's Support Group

Well, apparently the IWSG post I wrote and scheduled for publication yesterday failed to upload. But it's better to be a little late than never, right? Anyway, the Insecure Writer's Support Group is a blogging community dedicated to struggling writers where we can get together and offer each other encouragement. If you're interested in joining us, check us out here!

This month I'm thinking of a new story, one that is firmly founded in the Christmas tradition. But I can't help but wonder if that's a good idea in today's environment? Is it a good idea to write a story wrapped up in a Christian holiday, thus alienating secular and non-Christian readers? To be clear, this story has nothing to do with religion other than the holiday it springboards from. But I can't help but worry it falls in to deep a niche for a broad audience.

Insecure Writer's Support Group

It's the first Wednesday of the month and time for another Insecure Writer's Support Group post. A big thank you to Ninja Captain Alex J. Cavanaugh for starting this amazing group where writers with insecurities can connect and support one another. If you're interested in joining us, check at the IWSG here!

My insecurities this month are a bit more complicated than normal. Far from worrying about when I'll find time to write or how I'm going to get back into the swing of things, this month I'm worried about having something important to say. As F. Scott Fitzgerald famously said "You don't write because you want to say something, you write because you have something to say". And I can't help but wonder sometimes if the stories I write really say anything of value. They're fun and I certainly enjoy writing them, but is that enough?

Do any of you ever wondering if what you're writing matters? If you're words have any value? If they really say anything?

Insecure Writer's Support Group

It's the first Wednesday of the month and time for another Insecure Writer's Support Group post. A huge shout out to our fearless leader Ninja Captain Alex J. Cavanaugh for starting this group, and for all this month's wonderful co-hosts. If you're an insecure writer looking for some empathy, check us out here!

I don't have a lot of writing insecurities for this month, namely because I haven't written anything in while and therefore cannot be insecure about it (well, unless you count insecurities about getting back to writing, etc.). So instead I want to commemorate this auspicious day, which in case you haven't already read, marks the FOUR YEAR anniversary of the Insecure Writer's Support Group and the two year anniversary of the IWSG website. It's amazing to see how far this group has come, and I'm so thankful to be a part of such a wonderful organization of writers. I've met so many wonderful people through IWSG and been offered some inspirational words of advice and comfort on my own journey as an aspiring author.

Don't forget to head over to the website today and check out the amazing opportunity offered there today (hint hint, it's a short story contest)! And HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the wonderful, amazing Insecure Writer's Support Group!

Insecure Writer's Support Group

It's the first Wednesday of the month and time for another Insecure Writer's Support Group. A big shout out to Ninja Captain Alex J. Cavanaugh for starting this amazing group, and all his co-hosts of the month for their help keeping things running. If you're an insecure writer or just looking to support those of us that are, check us out here.

I'm seven months pregnant and my writing inspiration has shriveled up for the summer. So instead of writing about my insecurities, I thought I'd share a few quotes about writing from sources much more inspiration than myself. Check them out:

“There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.”

“Substitute 'damn' every time you're inclined to write 'very;' your editor will delete it and the writing will be just as it should be.”

“You never have to change anything you got up in the middle of the night to write.”

“No tears in the writer, no tears in the reader. No surprise in the writer, no surprise in the reader.”

“The road to hell is paved with adverbs.”

“Writing is a socially acceptable form of schizophrenia.”

I hope you enjoyed the wise words (the last quote in particular hits home for me). To all my fellow insecure writers out there, keep bleeding, weeping, getting up in the middle of the night to bang away at your keyboard and generally acting like a socially acceptable schizophrenic!

Insecure Writer's Support Group

It's the first Wednesday of the month and time for another Insecure Writer's Support Group post. A huge thank you to Ninja Captain Alex J. Cavanaugh for starting this group, and all this month's co-hosts for all their hard work. If you're an insecure writer or just looking to support those of us that are, check us out here!

My concern for the month centers around writing with a partner. I tend to be a solitary writer, territorial of my work and locked away for hours on end (preferably in the middle of the night) while I write. But for the first time I'm thinking or working on a new piece with another writer. And for the life of my I'm not sure how this is supposed to work. Do I write a chapter and they write a chapter, and review each other's pages? Do we write them together? How does this go?

Are there any of you out there who've done the co-writing thing before? How did you go about starting? Did you like it better or worse than solo-ing it? Any tips, tricks, or pieces of advice? I am all ears.

Good luck to all you other insecure writers out there, and as always, happy blogging!

Insecure Writer's Support Group

It's the first Wednesday of the month and time for another Insecure Writer's Support Group post. A huge shout out to Ninja Captain Alex J. Cavanaugh and co-hosts of the month for all their hard work! If you're an insecure writer or looking to support those of us who are, check us out here.

My insecurities for the month are simple. I'm moving. I'm so excited to be fleeing my tiny apartment and setting up camp in a wonderful house with my husband just in time for my baby to make a big debut, but it's hard work getting things all set up. It takes away from other important activities like writing and, you know, my sanity.

On the other hand, I get an office. A real life, all to myself office. No squeezing my desk in a corner behind a couch or in a dark area of my already overcrowded bedroom. For the first time in my life I get to set up a space JUST for writing. And that makes all the chaos of moving totally worth it.

So I guess maybe my monthly insecurities can -- for once -- be considered less substantial than my celebrations. Yay for June!

What about you guys? Any insecurities weighing you down this month?

Insecure Writer's Support Group

It's the first Wednesday of the month and time for another Insecure Writer's Support Group post! A big shout out to Ninja Captain Alex J. Cavanaugh for starting this group, and this month's co-hosts for being such a great support! If you're an insecure writer or just looking to support others who are, join us here!

My writing insecurities this month are caught up in my personal insecurities -- I'm going to be a mommy. My husband and I are beyond thrilled (especially now that the morning sickness phase has passed), but as a writer, it's instilling within me many of fear and doubt. Will I have time to write after the baby comes? I barely have time to write now, let alone when a tiny person is dependent on my constant love and attention. I write Middle Grade fiction, so a part of me hopes that my soon-to-be bundle of cuteness will inspire me in new ways. But it's hard to know what my life will be like five months from now.

What are some of your writing insecurities this month? Any other writing mothers out there with advice for me?

Insecure Writers Support Group

It's the first Wednesday of the month and time for another Insecure Writer's Support Group post. A huge shout-out to our fearless leader, Ninja Captain Alex J. Cavanaugh, for starting this group and giving anxious writers everywhere an outlet for their fears and way to connect with one another. If you're an insecure writer or just looking for a little support, click here to join us!

This month I'm a little anxious about time. Not just managing it, but having enough in the first place. I've been dealing with some health related issues which suck away at the vast majority of my time. Added to that I've got A to Z coming up (my first year as a co-host, yay!), blogging, and my own sorely neglected writing. Sometimes it feels a little overwhelming.

Do any of you IWSG-ers feel the same way? Any tips? Pieces of advice?

I hope this month goes well for all you writers out there. Keep up the good (sometimes exhausting) work! And don't forget to sign up for the Blogging from A to Z Challenge (which starts April 1st) and The Great and Powerful A to Z Theme Reveal Blogfest (happening March 23rd). Sign ups are still going on NOW! Just click on the links to enter and join us.

Insecure Writer's Support Group

It's the first Wednesday of the month and time for another Insecure Writer's Support Group post. A big thank you to our fearless leader, Alex J. Cavanaugh, for starting this group and giving writers a place to voice our fears. If you're an insecure writer or a writer looking to give support to others, check us out here.

This month I have one very specific writing concern, and it's related to blogging -- the Blogging from A to Z April Challenge in fact. I'm one of the co-hosts this year, and I'm super excited for the chance to work with the incredible A to Z Team. But as it's my first year as part of the team, I'm a little anxious about doing the job well and making sure that I make ever participant feel welcome and encouraged. It's a lot of work, but I can't wait!

[Shameless A to Z plugging -- if you haven't signed up yet, there's still time! Click here to join us!]

If anyone is interested in helping me overcome this month's insecurity, I could use a few awesome Minions on my team. If you're interested in becoming involved in the A to Z Challenge, please let me know.

Good luck this month to all my fellow insecure writers. And as always, happy blogging!

Insecure Writer's Support Group

It's the first Wednesday of the month and time for another Insecure Writer's Support Group post. A big shout out to our fearless leader, Alex J. Cavanaugh, for starting this amazing group where writers can connect with one another. If you're an insecure writer or a writer interested in supporting others, check us out here!

Today each IWSG member has been asked to write a little introduction before their post, so keeping that in mind, my name is S. L. Hennessy and I'm an insecure writer. I double majored in English Lit and History in college, and reading is my absolute favorite activity. I've completed my first novel, a middle grade piece about superheroes, and I have an agent representing me. As of yet, I have no publisher, but fingers crossed.

As for my insecurities this month, well, they are legion. But it's the dawn of a new year, and the perfect time for fresh starts. I encourage everyone who struggle with writing last year (as I certainly did) to brush off their past troubles and dive in with a newfound sense of determination. That's my goal for 2015!

Happy blogging fellow IWSG-ers, and a happy new year! Can't wait to check in with everyone and read some of your introductions.

Insecure Writer's Support Group

It's the first Wednesday of the month and time for another Insecure Writer's Support Group post. A huge shout out to or fearless leader Ninja Captain Alex J. Cavanaugh for starting this amazing online collaboration and this month's hosts for all their hard work! If you're an insecure writer or looking to support others who are, check us out here!

I fear that my insecurities this month are much the same as they've been the past several as I struggle to get back on the writing horse and actually make some headway on a new piece. It's hard to stay motivated when I have a completed novel out there wasting away without a publisher, and an agent I'm worried might have lost my number. But I battle on, trying to nudge that cynical voice whispering dark thoughts in my ear to the back of my mind.

On a happier note, the IWSG's Guide to Publishing and Beyond is now available for download! For those of you who are new to the group, it's a collaborative work with contributors across the blogosphere and it's bursting with great tips on writing and the publishing industry.

Here's a quick synopsis from the IWSG website:

Tapping into the expertise of over a hundred talented authors from around the globe, The IWSG Guide to Publishing and Beyond contains something for every writer. Whether you are starting out and need tips on the craft of writing, looking for encouragement as an already established author, taking the plunge into self-publishing, or seeking innovative ways to market and promote your work, this guide is a useful tool. Compiled into three key areas of writing, publishing, and marketing, this valuable resource offers inspirational articles, helpful anecdotes, and excellent advice on dos and don'ts that we all wish we knew when we first started out on this writing journey.

If you're interested in getting a copy, you can find it at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Kobo, Smashword, and Goodreads.

Good luck fellow IWSGer's. No matter your insecurities this month, keep up the hard work. And of course, happy blogging!

Insecure Writer's Support Group

It's the first Wednesday of the month and time for another Insecure Writer's Support Group post. I am honored to be one of this month's co-hosts, along with Donna Hole, LG Keltner, Lisa Buie-Collard, and of course, Ninja Captain Alex J. Cavanaugh. If you're an insecure writer or just looking to give some support to those of us who are, check us out here!

Two days ago a friend of mine posted something on my Facebook about writing -- it was an excerpt from Amy Poehler's newest work 'Yes Please', and it was dead on. On the subject of writing, she says:

“Everyone lies about writing. They lie about how easy it is or how hard it was. They perpetuate a romantic idea that writing is some beautiful experience that takes place in an architectural room filled with leather novels and chai tea. They talk about their “morning ritual” and how they “Dress for writing” and the cabin in Big Sur where they go to “be alone” — blah blah blah. No one tells the truth about writing a book. Authors pretend their stories were always shiny and perfect and just waiting to be written. The truth is, writing is this: hard and boring and occasionally great but usually not. Even I have lied about writing. I have told people that writing this book has been like brushing away dirt from a fossil. What a load of s***. It has been like hacking away at a freezer with a screwdriver.”
- Amy Poehler, Yes Please

I hate the term 'lol', but I literally (and I mean literally in the literal sense, not figuratively as people often do) laughed out loud when I read this. Because she's absolutely right. When I write, it's not lovely. It's not some BBC version of the melancholy artist, shut up in a beautifully sparse attic diligently hand writing great works of literary fiction.

It's ugly. It's typing out two pages of text, only to delete all but three paragraphs. It's reminding myself over and over again "show, don't tell" or "active voice, active voice, active voice". It's cursing at the monitor or taking a two hour "break" to binge watch cat memes because I have no idea where my story is going next. And when it's done, it's endless hours of edits and revisions. Of changing things that seemed to make sense at three in the morning when you originally wrote it.

And though I can't imagine doing anything else, it's rarely fun. It's work. It's hard. And it's what we do. So let's go out there and do it. Happy blogging people, but more importantly, keep up the good work and keep writing.

Insecure Writer's Support Group, One Year Webiversary and Upcoming eBook

It's the first Wednesday of the month and time for another Insecure Writer's Support Group post. A big shout out to our fearless leader, Ninja Captain Alex J. Cavanaugh for starting this amazing online collaboration. If you're an insecure writer or just looking to give some support to others, check us out!

Today is a very special day for the IWSG -- it's the one year anniversary of the launch of our amazing website (just click here for the link). If you haven't visited before, it's a wonderful tool for writers with all manner of tips for finding agents, publication, etc. And of course, a way for us to connect with one another and offer up advice or reach out for a little support.

In honor of our one year webiversary, IWSG is putting together an ebook benefitting writers, inviting all it's members and followers to contribute. So if you have any advice to offer on writing, publishing or marketing, get blogging! (See more details on how to participate here.)

On that note, here's my own contribution . . .

How to Find a Literary Agent

Writing is hard work, but getting published is infinitely harder. They say the first step to getting published is finding a literary agent, but how is a first time author supposed to get their attention? Smoke signals? Fireworks? Kidnapping and extortion?

While I've certainly given all three some serious thought, there are a few more "official" options to consider:

The first is the loathsome and dreaded query letter. Write them well, send them in droves, and pray to whatever deity you believe in that they get the job done. If you choose this option, may the good fortune of J. K. Rowling be with you. And if you need any advice, check out former literary agent and bestselling author Nathan Bransford's How to Write a Query Letter.

The second option is writing conferences.

Writing conferences are critical tools for first time authors looking to network and build contacts in the writing world. From keynote speeches on how to get published to workshops on writing query letters or understanding the changing nature of the publishing industry, these conferences are a wealth of untapped knowledge. Furthermore, they supply unpublished authors with a golden opportunity -- a chance to pitch their work to agents in one-on-one sessions.

I've found personal success through these pitch sessions, as it allowed me to discuss my work in greater and more personal depth than any query letter I might send. In fact, it was through a writing conference pitch session that I landed my own literary agent to represent my work. So write a query, sign yourself up for writing conferences, and most importantly, keep at it!

S. L. Hennessy, Middle Grade author and blogger at Pensuasion
Category: Publishing
I hereby give my permission to use this piece in the IWSG ebook.

Special e-Book News

First I'd like to take a second to say a special thank you to everyone who helped make Sunflowers for Tina Downey #LifeisGood a success. I'm sure it would have meant the world to Tina to see so many beautiful sunflowers lighting up the blogging world in her honor.

In further news, Samantha Redstreake Geary made the announcement that a special ebook will be launched this Friday, September 12th. It features the collaborative works of 26 amazing authors, including Tina Downey and Ninja Captain Alex J. Cavanaugh, and is set to premiere on Amazon. The stunning book cover was created by incredible graphic artist and composer, Ryo Ishido.

All the proceeds from this collaborative effort will go to the Downey Education Fund set up for Tina's two sons (see the badge on my sidebar to contribute further). So please check out audiomachine's TREE OF LIFE: Branching Out this Friday!

In addition to TREE OF LIFE, the Insecure Writer's Support Group Team is putting together an eBook benefiting all writers, The IWSG Guide to Publishing and Beyond. And what's better, they are inviting all IWSG members and followers to contribute!! If you're interested in this exciting opportunity, here are the details:

The three topics will be writing, publishing, and marketing.

Each contribution needs to be between 200 and 1000 words. Focus on one of those three aspects and give us your best tip or procedure. The essay can include bullet points, top ten lists, and recommendations. (Websites, software, books, etc.)

You can either post it for your October 1 IWSG post or email it directly. TheIWSGATgmail.com or alexjcavanaughATearthlink.net (Since the length can go over the standard IWSG post length.) Include a one sentence byline and a link to your site. Also state that you give us permission to use it in the book and which topic it falls under. (We will only edit for misspellings and grammar mistakes.)

All submissions need to be sent or posted by October 2, 2014. We will compile them into an eBook and aim for an early December release. The book will be free and available for all eReaders.

So check out the Insecure Writer's Support Group is you're interested in participating in the eBook, or if you're just looking for a group of amazing writers and bloggers to offer you a little support.

Insecure Writer's Support Group

It's the first Wednesday of the month and time for another Insecure Writer's Support Group post. If you're an insecure writer or just looking to give out support to other writers, check us out here. And a huge shout out to our fearless Ninja Captain Alex J. Cavanaugh for starting this group and being the greatest support of all.

First of all, happy three year anniversary to the IWSG! It's helped so many, and made a real difference to many insecure writers, myself included.

For my IWSG post this month, I'm not going to talk about an insecurity. Instead, I want to discuss loss, and how writing can help us cope. Many of us are dealing with loss this month, mourning the death of blogger Tina Downey. In the past year I've also dealt with the loss of an old friend, murdered long before her time. Sometimes these kinds of tragedies can affect our writing, making it harder to focus on the day to day aspects of our craft. I certainly struggled with that these past two years.

But sometimes writing can be a solace to us, can comfort us and help us deal with the pain of loss. A journal, a story honoring the people missing from our lives, even a blog post -- writing gives us an outlet for our grief. And perhaps it can even help us move on.

Also, for anyone who knew Tina Downey, please take a look at the Blogging from A to Z Challenge website for a tribute to her memory.

Insecure Writer's Support Group

It's the first Wednesday of the month and time for another Insecure Writer's Support Group post! If you're an insecure writer or just looking to give some support to those of us that are, check us out here. And as always, a HUGE shout out to our fearless Ninja Captain Alex J. Cavanaugh for starting this group and giving us all so much support. Check him out here.

This month I am facing a a new dilemma. I'm several chapters into a a redraft of an old story, and it's humming along fairly well. But to be honest, I'm just not feeling all that invested in the project. And to make matters worse, there's another project that's been running around my head the past few days, but I'm struggling to get anything on paper. I'm feeling a little defeated, but I really need to keep working. And more to the point, I need to make a choice between these two projects. Any advice?

Good luck to all you other insecure writers out there!

Insecure Writer's Support Group

It's the first Wednesday of the month and time for another Insecure Writer's Support Group. If you're an insecure writer or just looking to give other writers some much needed support, check us out here. And a huge shout out to our fearless Ninja Captain Alex J. Cavanaugh for being the greatest support of all!

I don't feel much like griping about my struggles with writing or publication, or the fact that I feel pretty downtrodden, so instead I thought I would share the words of people much more interesting and successful than myself. So here are a few of my favorite quotes to inspire you in your writing this month.

"Books cannot be killed by fire. People die, but books never die. No man and no force can take from the world the books that embody man's eternal fight against tyranny. In this war, we know, books are the weapon."
-- Franklin D. Roosevelt

"A book is proof that humans are capable of working magic."
-- Carl Sagan

"There is more treasure in books than in all the pirate's loot on Treasure Island."
-- Walt Disney

Insecure Writer's Support Group

It's the first Wednesday of the month and time for Insecure Writer's Support Group! If you're an insecure writer or just looking for a forum to discuss writing strategies and meet other authors and bloggers, check us out here. And a huge shout out to our fearless leader, Ninja Captain Alex J. Cavanaugh, for starting this amazing group!

I've taken a month off from writing, blogging, and pretty much everything non-wedding related as I entered into the whirlwind that was getting married. But now my wedding has come and gone, my honeymoon enjoyed, presents opened, thank-you notes sent, and now... finally... I am able to get back to normal. Blissful, married normal, but normal nonetheless.

And I am a bit scared. I've decided to go back to work on a formerly abandoned piece that's been sitting on the metaphorical shelf for many years. It needs A LOT of work, and might be better left alone, but I've decided to just dive in and see what happens. And as nervous as I am that it'll be a complete disaster, I'm also experiencing that amazing feeling only writers know as we open up a fresh page and dive in to an all new (or in this case, new again) project.

It's wonderful, and terrifying, and I'll just have to keep plugging away and see what I've got underneath the wreck of my uncompleted first draft. Keep your fingers crossed for me! And good luck to all the other writers out there in various phases of the writing process. Remember, don't think of it as a novel. It's one word, followed by one sentence, followed by one paragraph, followed by...
