Insecure Writer's Support Group

It’s the first Wednesday of the month, and time for another Insecure Writer’s Support Group post. So here’s my insecurity for January. . .

I DO NOT WANT TO EDIT ANY MORE!!! I hate editing. Editing is the bane of my existence. No, it's more than that. It's the dark villain to my shining occupation. The Dr. Doom to my Mr. Fantastic, the Dr. Octopus to my Spider-Man, the Dr. Sivana to my Captain Marvel. [As Sheldon Cooper said . . . it's amazing how many supervillains have advanced degrees. Graduate schools should really do a better job screening those people out.]

Anyway, back to the topic at hand. As I said, I really HATE editing. I'm currently stuck in an editing vortex and feel like I may never get out. Every time I think I'm finished, my agent comes up with one more suggestion, one more critique. I just want to send the darn thing to publishers already!!! Not just because I want to be published and actually, you know, earn a living. But also because I am really ready to start working on book #2. I have all the ideas running through my brain, but know I shouldn't begin working on it until the first one is "complete".

It's so frustrating. I'm about ready to just throw in the towel. Or throw my manuscript in the fire –one  or the other.

  1. Don't give up yet! You're so close. Hopefully this time it will be perfect. :) Good luck.

  2. Fingers crossed you'll reach the end soon - you may already have, and just not know it yet :-)

  3. I hear ya. And I just remembered this was the first Wed. of the month. This day is seriously sucking. If I post before midnight it should still count, right?

  4. haha. Love the Sheldon Cooper reference. I know a lot of writers who just love editing, so it is nice to meet someone else who doesn't like editing their own work. It seems like it's never done!

  5. Just think of how close you are! No? Is that more frustrating? Then eat lots of chocolate. ^_^

Seriously though, you'll be done in no time.

  6. I totally know how you're feeling. I loathe editing. I'd rather just write a first draft, give it to someone else to edit, and move on to a new story. Yet, as we all must, I have to revise, revise, revise. Just remember: lots of people start writing novels, but so few finish. You've finished one. You're almost there! :)

  7. I am with you on this one, it is always tough editing, especially when you think you have edited enough already, and then somebody comes up with more suggestions. But you will get there soon keep it up x

  8. As someone who MUST edit it, (CURSE my dyslexia to the very pits of hell!) I hate it too. But it's always lovely when I find a word where I've left off a letter. So a sentence reads, "YOU CAN KILL HER!" instead of, "YOU CAN'T KILL HER!"

For a split second a turned my MC into a murderer. It's always fun to find gems like that and listen to the sadistic voice I never knew they had.

It's... interesting when something like that pops onto the screen. LOL

Also, if you're like me and easily forget the "ideas" if you use Scrivener for Mac or PC, you'll find you can outline and take notes so that they're there when you're ready to write them. :) It makes Microsoft word look like child's play and Scrivener is what the adults use. LOL

  9. Ugh, editing is a beast! So much more fun to draft. (And as a random side note, it's been my experience that graduate school creates the super villains, haha!) Good luck!

  10. I hate editing too. I leave beta copies with notes just sitting on my desktop so they stare at me every time I open my laptop, but then I ignore them XD But, when I really tear something to pieces and rewrite things, is one of the times when I most feel like a writer. Is that weird? Just remember, you're so close, and your story will be better for it!

  13. I really love editing. But I do understand the next book calling your name so loudly, and the edits getting in the way of that! A little frustrating, it is. Best of luck getting through it all!
